Read to Shine was started by community members who were concerned about summer slide. We researched options of what we could, and could not, viably do in our community. Access to books, and getting books into the hands of children, to support reading over the summer became our focus. Ideas were formed and the red book shelves were designed and placed in community locations around town. The program grew to keeping the shelves available year-round. After Hurricane Harvey we are working on new locations and collecting books to distribute.
